At the Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF), nestled within southern Türkiye’s vibrant landscapes, Armenia’s Foreign Minister, Ararat Mirzoyan, delivered a compelling discourse on the pivotal role international trade plays in forging global connectivity and interdependence.
This session, aptly named ‘International Trade, Connectivity, and Interdependence,’ brought to light the indispensable nature of trade in weaving nations together, fostering economic expansion, and laying foundational stones for peace.
Mirzoyan presented a vision where commerce transcends mere economic transactions, acting as a beacon for mutual reliance and peace. This synergy, he posited, significantly contributes to tranquility, a testament to his region’s experiences.
“When you establish connections with other countries, you’re not only contributing to your economy but also creating opportunities for mutual interdependence, which has positive implications for establishing peace. We have witnessed this firsthand in our region,” Mirzoyan elaborated, highlighting the extensive benefits of such interactions.
Rwanda’s Foreign Minister, Vincent Biruta, paralleled these thoughts, underscoring international trade’s critical role in invigorating the global economy. Biruta identified the cross-border exchange of goods, services, and ideas as a dynamo of innovation and prosperity, with connectivity at its essence.
“International trade is essentially what breathes life into the global economy. It promotes innovation and global prosperity by transcending borders,” Biruta asserted, emphasizing the world’s interconnected nature today.
Rifat Hisarciklioglu, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye, further championed trade as a peace mediator. He reminisced about Europe’s historical rivalries that culminated in two world wars, contrasting this with the present, where trade has transformed former adversaries into partners.
“Thanks to this economic union they formed, for the first time in history, Western Europe hasn’t seen war within its region for 80 years because trade is the greatest source of peace,” Hisarciklioglu remarked, accentuating trade’s unrivaled role in fostering regional serenity.
Hisarciklioglu encapsulated a critical insight: “Nations engaged in trade don’t discuss war or hold grudges against each other,” suggesting economic interdependence as not merely beneficial but vital for enduring peace and stability.
The insights from the ADF crystallize a central theme: international trade transcends economic mechanisms to emerge as a cornerstone of global connectivity, interdependence, and peace.
