A recent convocation in Hà Nội by the Agency of Foreign Trade (AFT) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) brought together municipal and provincial departments to deliberate on logistics sector oversight. AFT Director Nguyễn Anh Sơn spotlighted Vietnam’s prime geopolitical positioning and its intricate integration with the global economy as catalysts propelling the nation’s import-export and e-commerce indices to double-digit ascendancy.
Vietnam’s strategic locus in a dynamically evolving region, coupled with its allure for logistics operations within the Asia-Pacific, cements its role as an indispensable hub within global supply matrices. Esteemed by the World Bank’s logistics efficiency index at 43rd globally and top five within ASEAN—alongside Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines—Vietnam’s logistics sector burgeons with an average annual growth rate of 14-16%. This sector’s dynamism significantly bolsters the nation’s total export and import turnover, reaching $638 billion the previous year.
Beyond mere economic propulsion, the logistics domain enhances Vietnam’s international trade connectivity, weaving a comprehensive transportation network that facilitates seamless domestic and global commerce. Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu Province emerges as a focal point within this logistics tapestry, as elucidated by Vũ Bích Hảo, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade. This province prides itself on a diverse logistics service palette encompassing transportation, warehousing, and ancillary support, hosting over 300 enterprises dedicated to these functions.
The Cái Mép – Thị Vải Port cluster, nestled within Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu, exemplifies Vietnam’s strategic maritime prowess, potentially serving as a pivotal conduit for not only Vietnam but also Southeast Asia. With 24 operational projects and extensive wharf capacities, this cluster epitomizes the nation’s readiness to manage voluminous trade flows, affirming its stature as a premier logistics epicenter.
Amid calls for enhanced competitiveness and logistics industry augmentation, there is a clarion call for the MoIT to refine policies and articulate precise guidelines for logistics sector governance. Such legislative clarity promises a sturdy legal edifice for regional deployment and execution of logistics services, ensuring Vietnam’s sustained prominence on the global logistics stage.
