As global supply chains rebound from Covid-19 and geopolitical disruptions, Bangladesh is cementing its status as a favored destination for global denim retailers. Highlights from the Bangladesh Denim Expo in Dhaka underscored this trajectory, showcasing widespread optimism about the nation’s burgeoning role in the denim sector.
International brands are not only expanding operations but also escalating order volumes, encouraged by Bangladesh’s enhanced production capabilities and the redirection of orders from politically unstable regions like Myanmar. The country’s competitive production costs, superior quality outputs, and substantial capacity serve as principal attractions.
A significant shift toward sustainability marks another key development. Technological advancements in washing and dyeing processes have slashed water consumption dramatically—from nearly 350 liters to merely seven or eight liters per kilogram of fabric, bolstering the environmental credentials of Bangladeshi denim.
The chemical trade, essential for denim processing, also reports robust growth opportunities. Firms like Soko Chemicals and RNT (BD) have seen considerable expansion, with projections pointing to continued growth into 2024.
Technological integration extends beyond chemical products. Carmina Ferri, CEO of Care Applications, highlighted that the adoption of cutting-edge devices and equipment by local manufacturers is crucial to fulfilling soaring global demand.
Mostafiz Uddin, expo organizer, revealed that Bangladesh has surpassed China as the premier denim supplier to both the European Union and the United States, with the local industry now delivering nearly $5 billion worth of denim globally.
With forecasts suggesting the global denim market will expand to $76.1 billion by 2026, Bangladesh’s denim sector is strategically positioned to seize a larger market share. Substantial investments have equipped local mills to supply over 900 million meters of fabric annually, positioning Bangladesh as a powerhouse in the global textiles arena.
