On May 6, Taiwan and Lithuania convened their second agricultural cooperation dialogue, marking a significant stride in fostering agricultural trade and technological exchanges. The event, held concurrently online and on-site, was co-hosted by Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Tu Wen-jane at Taipei, and Lithuania’s Vice Minister of Agriculture, Vytenis Tomkus at Vilnius.
Insights from Constance Hsueh-hong Wang, head of the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania, and Paulius Lukauskas, head of the Lithuanian Trade Representative Office, enriched the discussions. They focused on pivotal topics such as sustainable agricultural practices, low carbon farming, and advanced plant breeding—crucial under the prevailing global climate challenges.
This collaborative framework, established with a memorandum of understanding signed in June 2023, has already catalyzed significant mutual export growth, enhancing Taiwan’s entry into the European market while opening avenues for Lithuanian products in the Indo-Pacific.
The Taiwanese delegation’s strategic visit to Vilnius centered on scrutinizing major policies, engaging with cutting-edge technologies, and expanding trade and agricultural collaborations. Their visit to Leafood, Europe’s most extensive vertical vegetable farm and a joint venture that leverages effective Taiwanese agricultural techniques, underscored this focus.
With the backdrop of intense global economic shifts and escalating climate change concerns, prioritizing the industry’s competitiveness and resilience becomes crucial. Taiwan and Lithuania are set to persist in their collaborative endeavors, aiming to advance sustainable agriculture and stand as a testament to the power of strategic international alliances.
