The World Trade Organisation (WTO) is going to host Trade and Environment Week to connect trade policies with environmental sustainability. This event supports the Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE), gathering WTO members, business leaders, international organisations, scholars, experts, and civil society.
A key feature will be a high-level event hosted by the WTO Secretariat and featuring WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Celeste Saulo of the World Meteorological Organisation, Francesco La Camera of the International Renewable Energy Agency, and Inger Andersen from the UN Environment Program.
Other notable participants include Bruce Gosper of the Asian Development Bank, Lord Adair Turner of the Energy Transition Commission, Ambassador Erwin Bollinger of Switzerland, Chairperson of the CTE, and Bertrand Piccard, Founder of the Solar Impulse Foundation. Aik Hoe Lim, Director of the WTO Trade and Environment Division, will lead the discussion.
WTO members will also guide side events on key environmental topics, including plastic pollution, critical minerals, sustainable agriculture, Sustainable Development Goals, and voluntary sustainability standards. Discussions will further explore embedded carbon emissions, environmental goods and services, renewable energy, nature-positive trade, and trade-related climate measures.
The WTO emphasises its dedication to addressing environmental issues in global trade, encouraging solutions that align trade practices with sustainability and development objectives. By facilitating diverse perspectives, the event seeks practical approaches for a sustainable trade landscape.
