Egypt has expressed its support for French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent call to halt arms exports to Israel for use in Gaza, citing severe violations of international law and humanitarian principles by the Israeli military in both Gaza and Lebanon.
The Egyptian foreign ministry, in a statement released on Sunday, highlighted that these violations have resulted in tens of thousands of civilian casualties, with the majority being women and children. The ministry affirmed that Macron’s stance aligns with the principles of international humanitarian law and reflects growing international disapproval of Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
Egypt also urged the international community to heed Macron’s call and reiterated its demand for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in both conflict zones. The foreign ministry further praised France’s supportive position on Palestinian rights and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the two-state solution and related international resolutions.
Macron, in an interview with French broadcaster France Inter, called for a halt to arms deliveries intended for use in Gaza. He also noted that all 88 member states of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), including France and Canada, have called for an ‘immediate and lasting’ ceasefire in Lebanon.
Additionally, Macron expressed concerns over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to send troops into Lebanon. In response, Netanyahu criticised Macron’s remarks, stating that Israel would achieve its goals with or without Western support.
On Sunday, Macron’s office responded to Netanyahu’s criticism, describing his reaction as “excessive and detached from the friendship between France and Israel.”
