The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution co-authored by Greece and the United States, focusing on strengthening maritime security in the Red Sea. Passed with 12 votes in favor and abstentions from China, Russia, and Algeria, the resolution highlights the urgency of addressing rising Houthi threats in the region.
The resolution opposes ongoing Houthi attacks on merchant vessels and oil terminals, which have significantly impacted Yemen’s economy and aggravated the country’s humanitarian crisis. It emphasizes the Red Sea’s strategic importance to global supply chains and calls for an immediate halt to Houthi aggression to safeguard this critical maritime corridor.
Key Provisions of the Resolution
The document reaffirms the sovereignty of nations bordering the Red Sea and stresses the importance of regional cooperation to restore peace and stability. It recalls prior Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216 (2015), which addresses Yemen’s conflict and maritime security.
Among its provisions, the resolution:
- Denounces Houthi attacks that have disrupted oil exports, weakened Yemen’s currency and worsened civilian hardships.
- Extends the monitoring of maritime security developments in the region until July 15, 2025.
- Demands the immediate release of the detained vessel Galaxy Leader and its crew, citing violations of international law.
- Calls on member states to enforce the arms embargo established in Resolution 2216 and prevent the transfer of weapons to the Houthis.
Greece’s Role and Advocacy
Greek Ambassador to the UN, Evangelos Sekeris, reiterated Greece’s commitment to maritime security and freedom of navigation. “As a maritime nation, Greece is deeply dedicated to protecting international shipping lanes and ensuring the safety of seafarers,” he said.
Sekeris condemned the Houthis’ use of advanced weaponry, including missiles and drones, in targeting civilian infrastructure. He highlighted Greece’s active role in initiatives such as the EU naval operation ‘Aspides’ and urged international collaboration to address the source of such weapons and strengthen the arms embargo.
A Step Towards Lasting Peace
The resolution underscores the importance of a political solution to achieve enduring peace in Yemen. Both Greece and the United States view this as a call for all stakeholders to back UN-led diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving conflicts and stabilising the region.
