Egypt is bolstering its roll-on and roll-off (Ro-Ro) shipping capabilities to improve the efficiency of exports, primarily for perishable agricultural products to European markets.
The Ro-Ro line commenced in November last year, links Egypt with Italy through a green corridor, positioning Egypt as a key regional center for transportation, logistics, and transit trade.
Vice Prime Minister for Industrial Development, Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir convened with Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk to maximize the benefits of the Ro-Ro shipping line between Damietta and Italy’s Trieste. The discussion centered on optimizing the transport of refrigerated and dry cargo to support the country’s expanding export sector.

The meeting highlighted the benefits of the Ro-Ro shipping line, focusing on the reciprocal port fees and operational incentives at both ports. Remarkably, port fees were slashed by 88%, from $26,050 to $3,250 per voyage, to promote the utilization of shipping lines. Moreover, a 35,000-square-meter area has been allocated for the project, equipped with full-service connections.
Officials assessed the Ro-Ro line’s performance, including trip counts, cargo volumes, and major export categories. They further reviewed proposals and future plans from Pan Marine, the line operator, to help Egyptian exporters maximize the route’s potential and expand their reach into European markets.

To support operations, the Damietta Port Authority issued a government guarantee letter to Egyptian Customs, while the Ministry of Finance equipped the port with an X-ray scanner to augment security and efficiency. Furthermore, Egyptian and Italian customs will be linked through upgraded digital applications at Damietta Port, facilitating the exchange of official documents, including health and food safety certificates.
The discussion also emphasized the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders—the Federation of Egyptian Industries, the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, export council heads, and exporters to utilize the Ro-Ro line’s potential.
