The World Trade Organization (WTO) Chairs Programme has launched trade capacity-building activities in Tanzania to aid the East African Community’s growth and development. The Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa will concentrate on topics pertinent to least-developed African countries, such as e-commerce, trade remedies, and trade preferences’ utilization and their impact on regional value chains. The event was followed by two policy discussions on digital trade and e-commerce’s challenges and opportunities for regional integration.
Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang expressed confidence in the team appointed at the Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa to advance the Chairs Programme’s goals. Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Investment, Industry, and Trade, Exaud Silaoneka Kigahe, noted that the Chairs Programme would facilitate access to research necessary to inform trade-related decision-making. The Director General of the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute, Professor Martin Lwanga, stated that the institution intended to fully utilize the WTO Chairs Programme’s support.
France, Austria, the Republic of Korea, and Australia represent the donors of the Chairs Programme. Cynthia Zimmermann, Director-General of Austria’s Ministry for Labour and Economic Affairs, and Ambassador Jung Sung Park, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea, represented them. Zimmermann noted that the rigorous programmes of the Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa are designed to enable beneficiaries to actively participate in trade negotiations and policies. She believes that universities and research institutions can play a leading role in facilitating countries to harness opportunities from international trade.
