To make a remarkable status in the global coffee trade, India is eagerly preparing to host the country’s first World Coffee Conference (WCC). The Coffee Board of India, in partnership with the International Coffee Organization (ICO), will orchestrate the fifth edition of this esteemed event at Bengaluru, the vibrant tech capital, spanning from September 25 to 28, 2023.
During a recent preview ceremony, K G Jagadeesha, CEO and Secretary of the Coffee Board of India, revealed the official WCC 2023 logo and introduced internationally renowned tennis player Rohan Bopanna as the event’s brand ambassador. These unveilings serve to emphasize the conference’s significance as a monumental event within the global coffee landscape, with India poised as the focal point.
Championing sustainability through a circular economy and regenerative agriculture defines the central theme of the conference, set to redefine the trajectory of coffee farming. India’s coffee farmers are presented with a unique opportunity: to introduce their rich and aromatic produce to a diverse international audience, potentially paving the way for new markets and channels of growth.
As described by Jagadeesha, this Asian premiere of the WCC stands as a pivotal event, engineered to craft new opportunities and markets for these farmers by introducing the distinctive coffees of India to a global stage. The conference’s rich itinerary over four days includes enlightening talks, exhibitions, workshops aimed at skill enhancement, a CEO and global leaders forum, and a growers’ conclave, with a massive delegation expected from over 80 countries.
Previous hosts of the World Coffee Conference – England (2001), Brazil (2005), Guatemala (2010), and Ethiopia (2016) – set the stage for India’s 2023 edition, which symbolizes a significant leap for the country’s coffee industry. Bengaluru transforms into the global epicenter of coffee dialogue, innovation, and networking, attracting a vibrant mix of producers, curers, roasters, exporters, policymakers, researchers, and coffee lovers from every corner of the world.
The privilege of hosting the WCC extends beyond ceremonial importance in the way it establishes a platform for India to display its robust coffee culture and stake its claim within the global coffee economy. The event promises to instigate international collaborations, architect trade partnerships, and foster an atmosphere conducive to knowledge sharing. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainable coffee production using a circular economy and regenerative agricultural practices propels the worldwide drive for greener coffee industry.
India stands on the precipice of a momentous occasion, prepared to welcome delegates and participants to the World Coffee Conference 2023. The conference encapsulates the power of dialogue, the exchange of innovative ideas, and a shared global passion for coffee. It is anticipated that the upcoming conference could reshape the trajectory of the global coffee industry and chart a sustainable future for coffee farmers around the globe.
