The Alabama Department of Commerce’s Global Business team is spearheading a mission to Germany for MEDICA 2024, the world’s premier medical industry event, with a delegation of Alabama-based small and mid-sized businesses. MEDICA, which began today and runs through Wednesday, attracts exhibitors and visitors from over 60 countries, offering Alabama companies a valuable platform to explore new markets, forge international partnerships, and demonstrate their innovative products and services.
The Alabama delegation is hosting a ‘Made in Alabama’ booth at the Düsseldorf event, highlighting the state’s growing capabilities in bioscience and medical technology. Christina Stimpson, Chief Officer of Global Business for Commerce, emphasized the significance of Alabama’s participation, noting MEDICA’s role in connecting Alabama’s bioscience sector with global industry leaders. “MEDICA provides an unparalleled opportunity for Alabama’s bioscience and medical technology companies to connect with international partners, expand their market presence, and highlight the state’s strength in innovation,” Stimpson stated. “We are thrilled to support our businesses as they demonstrate Alabama’s capabilities to the world’s leading medical professionals and buyers.”
Alabama-based bioscience companies represented at MEDICA include BioGX, Dialytix, Endomimetics, Kalm Therapeutics, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, Primordial Ventures, and Reliant Glycosciences. These enterprises exemplify the expansion of Alabama’s bioscience sector, which currently employs approximately 15,000 workers statewide. Since 2021, over $280 million in private investment has bolstered Alabama’s bioscience industry, enabling sustained growth and advancements in disease research, drug development, and diagnostics. Leading institutions like the University of Alabama at Birmingham, HudsonAlpha, and Southern Research are at the forefront of these efforts.
The Alabama team’s European mission will continue in the Netherlands, a renowned hub for life sciences, with scheduled visits to Maastricht University and the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, an innovation center home to over 130 companies in green chemistry and biomedical applications. The Netherlands stop will include a pitch exchange between Alabama and Dutch companies, fostering cross-border collaborations and innovation.
The delegation will also head to Eindhoven for an ‘Invest Alabama’ presentation and a roundtable discussion, organized by the European Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Atlanta. This engagement aims to deepen Alabama’s ties with European businesses and highlight the state’s potential for investment and partnership in the bioscience and life sciences sectors.
The Alabama bioscience industry, contributing an estimated $7 billion annually to the state’s economy according to BioAlabama, is positioned as a national leader in medical innovation. The European mission, led by the Alabama Department of Commerce, marks a significant step in strengthening Alabama’s global presence and expanding the reach of its bioscience innovations.
