Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, has shown strong interest in importing 1,000 metric tons of hilsa fish from Bangladesh, stressing the considerable demand for the Bangladeshi delicacy in China.
“Bangladesh has a unique opportunity to reduce its trade deficit by capitalizing on the growing demand for hilsa fish in China,” Ambassador Wen stated during a meeting with Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin at the Secretariat on Thursday.
In addition to hilsa fish, the ambassador noted China’s interest in importing other Bangladeshi fruits such as mangoes, jackfruit, and guava. He also underlined the potential for increased Chinese investment in these sectors in Bangladesh.

Ambassador Wen emphasized China’s unwavering commitment to bolstering bilateral relations, pointing out that China has the potential to become one of Bangladesh’s closest allies. “Our relationship with Bangladesh is pivotal, and there are immense opportunities for both countries to enhance trade and investment,” he said.
Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin stressed the strategic opportunity to strengthen economic relations. He identified key sectors such as agriculture, transportation, agro-machinery, and healthcare as promising areas for Chinese investment.

The Commerce Adviser urged China to reduce tariffs on Bangladeshi exports and increase the import of Bangladeshi goods to address the trade imbalance between the two nations. He proposed the establishment of truck manufacturing plants and agricultural modernization projects in Bangladesh, outlining the mutual benefits these initiatives could bring to both countries.
Ambassador Wen reported that 30 Chinese firms have shown interest in investing in the Chittagong Economic Zone, reflecting the growing enthusiasm among Chinese investors to explore economic opportunities in Bangladesh. Both nations remain optimistic about future prospects for strengthening collaboration as trade and investment discussions advance.
