Jobst Von Kirchmann, the European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe, declared that Zimbabwean companies are now eligible to export products to the EU entirely duty-free.
Speaking at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo last week, Ambassador Von Kirchmann emphasized the opportunities for local businesses amid global trade concerns. He noted that these challenges have intensified following the imposition of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Although certain duties may still apply to EU imports into Zimbabwe, the ambassador highlighted that Zimbabwean exporters will now benefit from unprecedented access to the European market. The development is expected to create new opportunities for local producers seeking to expand their reach in international markets.

Ambassador Von Kirchmann disclosed that European foreign direct investment (FDI) in Zimbabwe has seen a threefold increase in recent years, with over €500 million allocated to initiatives promoting sustainable agriculture and women’s empowerment. These efforts include supplying farmers with drought-resistant crops and enhancing livelihoods.
Zimbabwe’s exports to the EU are led by horticultural products, with the bloc purchasing more than 40% of the nation’s horticultural production. Trade between Zimbabwe and the EU now surpasses €700 million annually, making the EU Zimbabwe’s fourth-largest trading partner.
The ambassador pointed out that many Zimbabwean businesses are unaware of the duty-free export opportunities available from the EU, which pose a significant challenge.

To bolster Zimbabwe’s private sector, the EU has introduced a €60 million lending facility through the European Investment Bank. The program provides long-term, low-interest loans to local enterprises to promote industrialization and create jobs.
The EU-Zimbabwe Business Forum will take place in Harare from May 20 to 22. It aims to foster joint ventures between European and Zimbabwean companies, with a focus on agriculture, horticulture, agro-processing, renewable energy, and mining beneficiation.
