New Delhi: India is one of the largest producers and exporters of cashew kernels in the world, contributing significantly to the global cashew trade. With a steady increase in demand for cashews in international markets, India’s cashew industry has experienced considerable growth over the years.
According to recent data, India exported over 1.5 lakh tonnes of cashew kernels during the 2020-21 financial year, worth approximately Rs 9,000 crore. Vietnam, the leading cashew processor, is one of India’s major markets for cashew exports, accounting for over 60% of India’s cashew exports.
India’s cashew industry has been expanding due to the adoption of advanced technology and improved processing methods, enabling cashew processors to produce high-quality kernels that meet international standards. The cashew industry also provides employment opportunities to over 2 million people, mainly in rural areas.
The cashew industry in India is highly organized, with several trade associations working towards the promotion and development of the industry. The Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) is one such organization that has been instrumental in boosting cashew exports from India.
The CEPCI, in collaboration with the Indian government, has taken several measures to promote the cashew industry, including the establishment of cashew processing clusters in various parts of the country, offering financial assistance and subsidies to cashew processors, and organizing trade fairs and exhibitions to showcase Indian cashew products.
Despite the positive growth trends, the Indian cashew industry faces some challenges, including the increasing competition from other cashew-producing countries, rising prices of raw cashew nuts, and fluctuating demand in the international market.
To overcome these challenges, the Indian government and the industry are focusing on diversifying into value-added cashew products, such as flavored cashews and roasted cashews, to increase demand and generate higher revenue.
Overall, India’s cashew industry has come a long way, and with the continued support from the government and industry stakeholders, it is expected to grow further and contribute significantly to the global cashew trade.
