India’s trajectory in mobile exports is poised to eclipse ₹1.2 trillion by the end of this fiscal year, marking a significant milestone driven by government incentives aimed at local production by mobile phone industry titans Apple and Samsung.
Growth Dynamics:
The forecasted export value constitutes nearly one-third of India’s overall mobile phone production, projected at approximately ₹4.1 trillion for FY24, as reported by the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) this Thursday. This development underscores the pivotal role of top-tier brands in this sector.
Analysts highlight that products from Apple and Samsung significantly contribute to this export surge, positioning mobile phones as the nation’s fifth-largest export by commodity.
Decadal Shifts & Initiatives:
From 2014 to 2024, mobile phone exports amassed an estimated ₹3.22 trillion. This era saw the rise of several manufacturing units, notably including Foxconn Technology Group, the preeminent global manufacturer of Apple iPhones.
Apple commenced its iPhone production within India in 2017, progressively amplifying its output. Following this expansion, the company introduced its renowned Apple stores to the Indian market last year, signaling a deepened commitment to its operations in the region.
The Indian government is now focused on integrating the nation further into global supply chains, positioning itself as a formidable contender to China within the electronics manufacturing arena. This move aligns with broader economic ambitions, as articulated by Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the ICEA.
Vision for the Future:
Mohindroo advocates for the strategic realignment of global electronics value chains to India, a move critical for scaling manufacturing, fostering job creation, and enhancing domestic value creation. He forecasts this strategic transformation in electronics manufacturing, led by mobile phone production, as a catalyst for doubling India’s GDP from its current $3.7 trillion to $7 trillion by 2030.
India’s strategic steps in electronics manufacturing, highlighted by its burgeoning mobile phone sector dominated by global leaders like Apple and Samsung, reflect its ascension and critical role in the global economic arena. The nation’s focused approach on scaling manufacturing capabilities and enhancing competitiveness is set to yield significant economic dividends, redefining its stature on the global stage.
