India’s apparel and textile exports surge by 5.13% to $17.66 billion between April and September 2024, with a 12.38% growth in September alone. Apparel exports surged by 17.30%, marking a strong recovery after a period of slow trade.
Textile exports increased by 2.76% to $10.155 billion, while apparel exports grew by 8.51% to $7.505 billion during the same period. The share of textiles and apparel in India’s total merchandise exports rose to 8.28%.
Cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups, and handloom products saw a slight rise of 0.79%, reaching $5.946 billion, while man-made yarn and fabrics grew by 2.95%. Carpet exports increased by 11.41%. In September 2024, textile exports totaled $1.813 billion, a 9.56% rise, while garment shipments rose by 17.30% to $1.110 billion.
Imports of raw cotton and waste increased by 18.74% to $477.38 million, and imports of textile yarn, fabrics, and made-ups rose by 3.45% to $1.176 billion. However, textile yarn and fabric imports fell by 1.80% in September 2024.
In fiscal 2023-24, India’s textile and apparel exports were $34.43 billion, down 3.24% from the previous year. Apparel exports fell by 10.25%, while textile exports increased by 2.62%.
Industry leaders welcomed the recovery. Sudhir Sekhri, chairman of AEPC, emphasized India’s competitive advantage despite global challenges. Mithileshwar Thakur, AEPC’s secretary-general, noted India’s growing role as a preferred sourcing destination.
Rakesh Mehra, chairman of CITI, pointed to continued momentum, while Sanjay K Jain, chairman of ICC National Committee, attributed the growth to declining global inventories and favorable market conditions.
