Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan announced the shipment of areca nuts from Jambi province to Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh on July 13, 2024. Indonesia, the foremost global exporter of areca nuts, supplies 35% of the world’s demand, strengthening its market dominance with this move.
At the export ceremony in Kumpeh, Muaro Jambi, Hasan emphasized the significance of Jambi as a major production hub. He declared that this region stands as a leading center for areca nut cultivation. The goal is to ensure this vital commodity remains competitive internationally.
The Trade Ministry’s commitment extends to enhancing national exports by expanding market access, providing necessary export assistance, and bolstering promotional efforts for Indonesian products. Hasan urged exporters to leverage these support programs to optimize their reach in global markets.
A recent drop in areca nut prices stems from increased production in key export destinations. Despite these challenges, Hasan remains resolute. He further noted the efforts to raise prices included multiple visits to India, the largest market. Local production there affects the prices significantly. The ministry’s trade diplomacy initiatives aim to stabilize and improve market conditions.
Indonesia’s government also prioritizes the development of key agricultural commodities like chocolate, coffee, pepper, cloves, areca nuts, and cinnamon. Hasan emphasized the importance of these products.
