Indonesia has solidified its status as the premier exporter of processed rattan, achieving a notable transaction value of $158.5 million. This accounts for 42.2 percent of the global processed rattan market, firmly establishing Indonesia as the industry leader.
During a visit to Katingan, Central Kalimantan on July 26, 2024, Putu Juli Ardika, Director General of Agro-Industry, highlighted Indonesia’s preeminent role. “Indonesia is currently the world’s largest exporter of processed rattan, amounting to US$158.5 million or around 42.2 percent of the world’s processed rattan export value of US$375.6 million, followed by China and Vietnam,” Putu remarked.

Indonesia’s success stems from its abundant rattan resources, contributing 80 percent of the world’s supply. Despite having 306 rattan species, only 28 are commercially exploited, providing Indonesia with a competitive edge.
To elevate the rattan industry’s economic impact, the Industry Ministry has outfitted the Hampangen Rattan Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) in Katingan Regency with 12 state-of-the-art rattan processing machines. This strategic move addresses raw material shortages and strengthens the furniture and craft supply chain.
Advanced processing capabilities allow local UPTDs to harness the region’s rattan potential, boosting foreign exchange earnings. Kalimantan, home to 137 rattan varieties, stands to gain significantly from these advancements.

“By providing ready-to-use raw materials, the industry can obtain raw materials according to the type, quality, size or specifications, the amount needed, and a clear price. Thus, the industry can reduce the lead time for the raw material preparation process so that the industry can focus on completing orders from buyers,” Putu explained.
Data from the Ministry of Industry’s Data Center (Pusdatin) for 2023 reveals that the national rattan furniture industry produces an average of 284,800 tons monthly, while the rattan processing industry generates 17,600 tons. These figures highlight the substantial output and potential of Indonesia’s rattan sector.
