President Joko Widodo of Indonesia undertook his inaugural visit to neighboring Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Wednesday, marking a significant step in strengthening Indonesia-PNG relations. The two-day official visit, the first since his presidency began in 2014, served to further cement the diplomatic and economic bonds between the two countries. The visit was warmly hosted by PNG Prime Minister James Marape in the nation’s capital, Port Moresby.
An essential objective of President Widodo’s visit was to address border security and development, a subject of mutual concern given the countries’ shared 760-kilometer land border along the island of New Guinea. This region has been a hotspot for illicit activities, including smuggling, trafficking, and armed separatist movements, necessitating strengthened cooperation in border management. Joint patrols, infrastructure development, and humanitarian assistance were among the measures discussed to enhance border security.
Moreover, a memorandum of understanding was signed, paving the way for Indonesian medical teams to deliver health services to communities residing in PNG’s border areas, fostering goodwill and cooperation.
Economic ties were another crucial agenda item during this visit, as Indonesia ranks as PNG’s second-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade hitting a robust $1.2 billion in 2019. Both leaders endorsed several agreements to facilitate trade and boost cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
Highlighting the need for private sector engagement and cooperation, the decision to establish a joint business council was also announced. President Widodo demonstrated a keen interest in the PNG energy sector, expressing his willingness to invest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects and extend Indonesia’s know-how and technology in LNG production and distribution.
PM Marape extended his gratitude to President Widodo for his commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, underlining PNG’s appreciation of Indonesia as a strategic partner and neighbor. The meeting culminated with an invitation to President Widodo to attend the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, hosted by PNG in 2024, symbolizing their deepening partnership.
