Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) unveils a bold strategy to enhance national crop production and combat El Nino’s adverse effects. The plan focuses on rapidly advancing the planting season, particularly in swamplands, to curb the nation’s import dependency exacerbated by El Nino’s climate impact.
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stresses the urgency of this accelerated planting approach. He asserts its critical role in reducing imports and establishing a robust foundation for future agricultural self-reliance. “This planting acceleration policy is very important for us to do to suppress imports caused by the impact of El Nino. Today we are laying the foundation so that in the future we can self-sufficiency,” Sulaiman stated, as reported by Antara.
Sulaiman’s proactive measures include visits to key agricultural areas like Central Sulawesi Province, South Sumatra, and South Kalimantan. These trips aim to assess and ensure readiness among rice fields, farmers, and extension workers for the critical October-March planting season. Sulaiman expresses confidence in achieving zero food imports by 2024, focusing particularly on rice.
Collaboration forms a cornerstone of the Ministry’s strategy. A significant partnership with the Indonesian National Army (TNI) backs the 2023 National Food Security Movement for Advanced Indonesia. Sulaiman highlights food security as a vital component of national stability, especially amidst economic and health crises.
The Ministry’s scope extends to supporting anti-terrorism efforts. A notable initiative involves engaging convicted terrorists (Napiters) in agricultural activities. This program aims to integrate these individuals into productive economic roles while bolstering national food production.
This comprehensive approach by Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture marks a significant step towards addressing global food security challenges and promoting sustainable, self-reliant farming practices.
