Kazakhstan solidifies its position as a key player in global agricultural exports, delivering an impressive array of products to over 80 countries. Dairy products reach South Korea, while horse meat finds its way to Japan, reflecting the country’s expanding influence among the top 25 global food exporters.
Kazakhstan’s agricultural portfolio features a wide range of goods: livestock, honey, dairy, sausages, and preserved foods. These products are destined for markets across the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and further afield. Key trading partners include Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, China, Mongolia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Japan, demonstrating Kazakhstan’s growing footprint in international trade.
Livestock exports stand out, with shipments of cattle, small livestock, horses, and camels reaching numerous countries. Demand for poultry products, honey, and raw materials like skins and feed continues to grow, extending to Türkiye and other regions.
The agricultural trade turnover for 2023 reached $11.3 billion, with $5.35 billion attributed to exports. Despite a slight dip compared to 2022, Kazakhstan’s export strategy remains robust. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries command particular attention, representing 70% of Kazakhstan’s agricultural exports, amounting to over $3.8 billion.
Russia, Uzbekistan, China, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan emerge as Kazakhstan’s primary agricultural trading partners. Notably, trade with Russia hit $3.46 billion in 2023, underscoring the strategic importance of these alliances.
Agriculture Minister Aidarbek Saparov underscores Kazakhstan’s ambitious goal to double agricultural exports by 2029. “Kazakhstan aims to double the export of agricultural products by 2029,” Saparov states. This vision aligns with the nation’s shift toward exporting deeply processed goods, which have doubled in value over the past five years, reaching $2.3 billion.
Plans include the development of joint processing plants with localized operations, intended to strengthen business ties and enhance food security both domestically and within the EAEU. Ongoing negotiations with the EU, Vietnam, Singapore, and the Gulf States aim to further diversify Kazakhstan’s export portfolio.
