Guangzhou, China’s vibrant trade hub, remarked a new chapter in Sino-Italian relation with a notable event in Rome, showcasing deep cultural and economic bonds between these nations.
For over two thousand years, Guangzhou has served as China’s gateway to international trade. Sun Yong, publicity director from Guangzhou’s Nansha District, reflected on the city’s historical significance as a bustling port on the Maritime Silk Road, welcoming merchant vessels worldwide, including Italy.
Signifying enduring ties, Sun Yong highlighted the construction of the world’s largest luxury ro-ro passenger ship, MOBY, operating in the Italian Mediterranean, by Guangzhou Shipyard International in Nansha.
Michele De Gasperis, President of the Italian One Belt One Road Institute, lauded Guangzhou’s blend of aesthetic allure and business prospects. His visit to the Canton Fair solidified his view of Guangzhou as a prime destination for Italian trade and tourism.
The event also celebrated cultural exchanges, exemplified by Italian pianist Giuseppe Ganzerli’s performance on a Pearl River piano, a renowned brand from Guangzhou. Gennaro Schlitzer from Queen’s SRL, shared his experience importing these pianos to Italy, likening their elegance to Guangzhou’s Pearl River.
Guangzhou chefs from the local Restaurants Group showcased the city’s unique cuisine, highlighting its international appeal. Angelo Tabaro, former culture minister of Italy’s Veneto Region, emphasized the rich cultural legacies of both nations, spanning art, literature, technology, and renewable energy.
Edouard Suzeau from Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) Design Studio Milan spoke about choosing Milan for its vibrant car culture, aligning with GAC’s passion for automotive design.
A striking moment was the presentation of ‘Embrace the World,’ a sculpture by Guangzhou artist Zeng Zhenwei, to Laura Gallon, President of the Italian Arte Laguna Prize, symbolizing ongoing art and cultural exchanges.
The bilateral trade volume between China and Italy soared to a record $77.9 billion in 2022. Li Ran from China Southern Airlines announced an increase in flights between Guangzhou and Rome, fostering further sectorial exchanges.
This event not only celebrated the achievements of Sino-Italian collaboration but also set a trajectory for a future rich in cooperative endeavors, strengthening the ties between these historic nations.
