Tesla, the pioneering American electric vehicle manufacturer, extended its ambitious stride into the Malaysian market through Tesla Malaysia Sdn Bhd, underpinning its commitment to promoting sustainable mobility.
The venture, articulated in a shared statement with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), acts as a compelling response to the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Global Leaders initiative by Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
As part of the expansion strategy, Tesla will unveil its sophisticated electric vehicle line-up to the Malaysian market, commencing with the Model 3 and Model Y. Catering to the distinct needs and preferences of Malaysians, Tesla anticipates introducing a broader array of models in future stages. Prospective buyers can place orders for these vehicles through Tesla’s official website.
Ensuring convenience and user-friendly experience for electric vehicle owners, Tesla plans to establish an extensive network of rapid and regular charging stations across strategic locales throughout Malaysia. This infrastructure seeks to offer a smooth charging experience, thereby promoting the adoption of EVs in the country.
Tesla’s operations will be anchored at its ultra-modern head office and service center in Cyberjaya, Selangor. This location will become a nerve center for all corporate activities, marketing, training, customer support, and vehicle services. Equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, the facility will also house a dedicated team of proficient Tesla technicians.
Tesla envisions a closer connection with its customers by creating experience centers in vital metropolitan areas across Malaysia. These centers aim to offer firsthand driving experiences in Tesla’s newest EV models and impart knowledge about the advantages of electric mobility.
As per the shared statement, these experience centers will serve as vibrant interactive spaces offering potential buyers insights into the benefits of electric mobility and personalized assistance from proficient Tesla sales representatives.
As Tesla forges ahead, MITI is committed to reshaping Malaysia’s industrial and investment panorama. This focus is beyond attracting globally acclaimed corporations like Tesla. MITI is also dedicated to bolstering the position of domestic suppliers within global value chains and unearthing ‘greener’ economic opportunities that promise higher remuneration for Malaysians.
“Tesla’s presence here will help raise Malaysia’s pro-business and pro-investment credentials on the global stage, and we look forward to welcoming more multinational investors that share our vision of developing a more sustainable, balanced, and inclusive economic growth for our nation,” voiced MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Between 2018 and March 2023, MIDA endorsed 58 projects totaling RM26.2 billion within the EV industry and associated ecosystems.
Echoing Tesla’s dedication to sustainable energy, Isabel Fan, Tesla’s regional director, commented that their mission is to hasten the world’s transition to sustainable energy, and Tesla is further eager to help cultivate a greener future for Malaysia.
Under the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021-2030, Malaysia targets ensuring that electromotive vehicles constitute at least 15 percent of total industry volume by 2030 and 38 percent by 2040. They also aim to install 10,000 charging facilities by 2025. Tesla’s expansion marks a crucial milestone toward achieving these audacious targets.
