The appetite within the United Kingdom for Vietnamese shrimp shows signs of a significant uptick, with predictions pointing to an annual export growth exceeding 10% through 2025. These expectations are underpinned by the tariff-free benefits stemming from the United Kingdom-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), as detailed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Import-Export Department.
The enactment of the UKVFTA has provided Vietnamese shrimp products with a competitive edge. It’s eliminating import duties and outpacing competitors from nations like Thailand and Brazil that lack a similar trade pact with the UK. Adherence to stringent origin requirements—mandating shrimp to be sourced and processed domestically is essential for enjoying these trade perks.
Vietnamese shrimp enterprises are quickly aligning with the stipulations of the UKVFTA, a transition reflected in the robust export figures. The export of white leg shrimp surged to $30.4 million, representing 69% of Vietnam’s seafood exports to the UK in the initial months of 2023. Meanwhile, black tiger shrimp exports saw an exponential increase, a sixfold rise compared to the previous year, despite its smaller share in total exports.
The UK’s demand for seafood, including shrimp, is expected to persist, even as the global market’s unpredictability and rising inflation could impact consumer pricing and the complexities of import operations.
Despite these potential hurdles, the long-term prospects for the UK as a profitable market for Vietnamese shrimp remain strong. Anticipated to constitute 3.6% of Vietnam’s estimated $4 billion shrimp export portfolio, the future shines promisingly for Vietnamese shrimp within the UK market.
This narrative not only underscores the pivotal influence of trade agreements in sculpting export landscapes but also highlights the adaptability of producers in meeting regulatory demands, ultimately affecting consumer selections and the fabric of international trade.
