Chris Nelson, Executive Director/Trustee of the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines, and James Thackery, Country Director for the Department for Business and Trade Philippines, recently delineated the expanding economic connections between the UK and the Philippines, spotlighting pivotal sectors such as cybersecurity, infrastructure, and renewable energy.
The British Chamber previously spotlighted the cybersecurity sector at its March 20, 2024, event, part of the monthly Trade & Connect series titled ‘Securing the Digital Frontier: Breaking Through Digital Boundaries.’ This forum, convened in collaboration with BCCP Corporate Member CyberQ Group and Colliers, brought together prominent figures like Jose Carlos P. Reyes, Director and Engineer from the Department of Information, Communications and Technology (DICT), and Pat Pio Fondevilla, Operations Head at the Philippine National Bank.
Discussions during this event accentuated the UK’s preeminence in cybersecurity and its vital significance for the Philippines, a sentiment reiterated by Nelson. The UK is a leader in that and that is actually a key and important area for the Philippines, as it has been noted as one of the priority bills for this administration,” Nelson commented. He also referenced the British Chamber’s dedication to augmenting the Philippine government’s efforts to bolster the national cybersecurity framework.
Additionally, the chamber endorsed legislative actions like the Cybersecurity Act and applauded the implementation of the National Cybersecurity Plan (NCSP) 2023-2028, established under Executive Order No. 58. This strategy implements a comprehensive ‘whole-of-nation’ approach to cybersecurity.
Thackery also underscored additional collaborative ventures between the UK and the Philippines, extolling the recent trilateral agreement on the Luzon Economic Corridor among the US, Japan, and the Philippines aimed at amplifying investments and economic growth. “Lots of the priority areas as part of this partnership are in infrastructure as well as clean energy. These are things that the UK has a huge expertise in, hopefully, there is going to be lots more investment from the UK,” he remarked.
