The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association (Vinafruit) announced record-breaking export achievements for 2024, reaching $7.2 billion, with products entering over 60 global markets. The announcement was made by Vinafruit Chairman Nguyen Thanh Binh during a conference held on December 27.
Key export items, including mangoes, bananas, and durians, have established a firm presence in China, the world’s largest fruit and vegetable market. Binh highlighted the growing number of products being exported via official channels, with China now granting export licenses to 15 Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. Products like durians, bananas, and coconuts are experiencing particularly strong growth.
Beyond China, Vietnamese exports have seen significant expansion in markets such as the United States, where growth exceeded 30%, and Thailand, with an impressive increase of over 80%.
Despite these successes, Binh stressed the importance of establishing comprehensive quality control standards to sustain export momentum, build consumer trust, and enhance the industry’s global reputation. While general standards exist, such as those addressing humidity, scratches, and surface roughness, they remain insufficient for high-value products like durians, dragon fruit, and bananas.
Developing detailed quality standards is essential, Binh explained, as it would provide a foundation for relevant ministries to confidently negotiate market expansions under the framework of 16 new-generation free trade agreements Vietnam has signed.
Binh concluded by urging the industry to prioritise the formulation and implementation of these standards, setting the stage for a more robust and sustainable export trajectory in the coming years.
