Brasilia (Federal capital of Brazil ): G20 ministers met in Brasilia on Thursday, reaching a consensus on actively enhancing women’s participation in global trade. This agreement, championed by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, marks the first time the G20 has formally adopted women’s inclusion in international trade as a core principle.
Brazil’s Vice President and Trade Minister Geraldo Alckmin noted that this decision aligns with a broader agenda of sustainable development, aiming to create a more equitable global economy where women play a significant role.
The ministers also addressed the urgent need for reform within the World Trade Organization (WTO), advocating for an updated conflict resolution framework that is “faster, more agile, and effective.” This commitment to a revitalized WTO aims to strengthen the multilateral trading system, which underpins a fair and transparent environment for global trade.
These recommendations, alongside the proposal for increased women’s participation, will be presented to G20 leaders at the annual summit in Rio de Janeiro this November, with the goal of integrating them into the group’s joint statement.
Additionally, the G20 discussions emphasized sustainable economic growth, with Brazil encouraging a shift toward trade and investments that support environmental sustainability. As the host of next year’s COP30 climate conference, Brazil placed significant importance on climate action, urging G20 members to consider environmental impacts in economic strategies.
The meeting, although brief, avoided divisive geopolitical issues, focusing instead on achieving consensus on these essential reforms. Minor disagreements arose during the drafting process, but a final agreement was reached, underscoring the collective commitment to fostering an inclusive, rules-based, and sustainable multilateral trade system. An Asian diplomat at the meeting confirmed that consensus was ultimately achieved, including the pivotal agreement on women’s participation in global trade.
